MSLD 511 Module 9 - Course Reflections
Revisit your original definition of leadership from Module 1. Would you make any changes to your definition of leadership? In what ways have learning about these leadership theories informed your own view of leadership? What type of leader are you or do you aspire to be?
"The art of setting a moral, ethical, and altruistic example (individually or as a group) thus influencing others to work towards a common goal, objective, or end result for the well-being of others, our community, and humanity as a whole."
Above is my original definition of leadership from module one. I am still pretty happy with it, but would like to add one aspect in order to fully complete the definition. Adding the need to continually improve leadership by gaining knowledge both academically and through others would be a good addition. Leadership cannot become stagnant on any level. With changes in culture and technology, leadership will have to change right along with them.
As we have seen, leadership is a constantly changing environment as it relates to the generational populace. For example, Brousell (2014) says that today's workforce of Millennials crave to receive training and support that aligns with a clear career path and leadership track. They are different than past generations who typically stuck with the same organization for many years and were less likely to "job hop". This is an example of today's senior leaders who are of the Baby Boomer and Generation X generations that have to learn different leadership styles and techniques that can keep up with a young Millennial workforce.
Learning how other leadership theories and styles work will help to solve leadership problems as they arise. Figuring out how to lead Millennials is a good example of that. In the end, I aspire to be the type of leader who fully researches and subsequently develops/improves my leadership style through knowledge, trial and error, leaders whom I admire and want to emulate and most importantly... I want to continually improve my leadership approach as a multitude of changes (cultural, technological, social, etc.) arise throughout my professional career. Servant Leadership is the main style that I will employ as it is the most pure leadership style from a moral and ethical standpoint and will help me adjust the the aforementioned change.
