Describe a common story in your organization and discuss its implications on the organization. Does this story promote the goals and ideals of the organization? Does it help describe "who we are and what we stand for?" What is the story's impact on the culture of the organization?

A common story that has been passed down in my organization relates to our importance as "first responders" to war and humanitarian emergencies. My organization is the 270th Air Traffic Control Squadron based at Kingsley Field, OR. Our mission is to set-up air traffic control services anywhere in the world within 72 hours should we be tasked. Since joining the unit a little over a year ago, my squadron commander has consistently told me the stories about what our squadron has accomplished and what our mission means to the state of Oregon and the U.S.

We discussed how our squadron first responded to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and humanitarian efforts such as helping to safely transport Keiko the Killer Whale (from the Free Willy movies) and helping support the air operations relating to the grounded freighter New Carissa of the coast of Oregon. These stories help to outline what the implications are on my organization and how important our squadron is to the local community and the U.S. military. Detailing these past accomplishments through storytelling has helped to promote and outline the ideals of our organization when we gather for monthly drills.

Before learning the art of storytelling through this class, I was being told stories that helped to define "who we are and what we stand for" before I really knew about the power or effects of storytelling as a leadership tool. Reflecting back, I now see how important storytelling can be in helping an organization realize its goals and mission. These stories about our organization since its inception in 1997 have helped to keep our squadron focused and ready for future conflicts or humanitarian efforts that require the unique abilities of the 270th Air Traffic Control Squadron. Our culture as a "mission ready" squadron is a direct result of storytelling from leadership and continuously re-telling the rich history of our squadron.
