Ethics is a life long learning process and my perceived value of this course is extremely positive:
This course has taught me that everything that I thought I knew about ethics... Doesn't amount to much. Sure, I have a fairly solid foundation of ethics and ethical behavior as a result of my upbringing and organizational affiliations, but there are so many more things that can be learned. Ethics is more dynamic and complicated than I had previously thought. There are many important ethical factors to consider and ever-changing issues to engage in when it comes to the world around us. As leaders, we must be prepared to engage these issues and come up with responsible, viable solutions. This course has taught me how truly dynamic ethics are and that they must never be purely studied alone—engaging with others about ethics is the best way to truly harness the power of ethics and improve our ethical behavior.
Because others perceive ethics differently than you doesn't make them wrong:
Like many other aspects of life, our fellow humans will inherently think differently than we do. Throughout this course, my fellow classmates and our professor have tactfully challenged me with good questions in response to my discussion board posts. These questions have forced me to think more deeply about my ethical behavior and morals as they stand now. It provided me with more perspective and an understanding of how much the knowledge and experiences of others can help me individually from an ethical and moral perspective.
Leaders are different than non-leaders—not only in their ethical standards, but their ability, want, and need to make the tough ethical/moral decisions:
Leaders throughout history make the hard ethical and moral decisions. Martin Luther King, Jr. is a prime example as he was faced with the challenges of racism and hatred during a time when standing up to prejudice was political suicide. Mr. King decided to put his reputation and ultimately his life on the line to stand up for what he believed to be ethically and morally just. Men like Mr. King have inspired us and taught us the value of using leadership to improve ethical and moral behavior not only in ourselves, but in our fellow man.
Although Mr. King was killed by a gunman's bullet, his work for his fellow man will never be forgotten. His ethical standards and education in morality allowed him to change the lives of millions. Millions who needed just the right leader with the right amount of ethical character and behaviors. To some things up, (Heathfield, 2017) quotes General Schwarzkopf who describes the tough job of the leader...
