MSLD 511 Module 5 - Mid-Term Reflection

You have reviewed a number of theories and concepts associated with leadership up to this point in the course. You have likely been associated with individuals who led using some or all of these principles. Therefore, you should have your own opinions about which leadership theories work well and which may be less effective or less representative of those used in the "real world." After watching the TED Talk consider the following questions:

1) How do you interpret Talgam’s ideas?

2) What are the parallels or disconnects between Talgam’s ideas about how conductors lead and what you know now about leadership?

Talgam (2009) makes a striking comparison between leaders and conductors of an orchestra. While an orchestra conductor is a form of a leader, they don't use words to convey their wishes. Without saying anything, a conductor can control the orchestra much like a leader of a company can also do. It would seem to me that Talgam is trying to convey the idea that our attitudes, demeanor, and body language can help us to support out followers and get the most out of them. Additionally, Talgam explains that trying to control your followers can lead to lead to unhappy followers.

Talgam seems to align his talk with a strong belief that leadership traits and skills are definitely vital to the leader/follower relationship. His view of leadership is very close to what Northouse (2016) describes as participative and supportive leadership. The videos of conductors shown by Talgam help to support his idea that a leader who actively participates with joy for the work and the people will be admired. Good conductors/leaders also let their people tell the story and are able let them know when to make small corrections without being too overbearing.

In the end, Talgam is able to parallel my own interpretation about how leadership should be. By letting followers feel your joy for the job and by supporting them in a positive manner, we can get them up to peak performance as we empower them without having to say much of anything. Much like the conductors in the video, we as leaders can say almost nothing but are able to support our followers through subtle positive indicators. In my own experience, I have really wanted to follow the leaders who expressed great joy for the work and the people much like a great conductor.
